Oh dear...
iOS 7 was announced on the 10th of June, by golly, i have my work cut out. All the interfaces i have completed recently will need a re-jig to fit the new iOS specifications. I admit i think its pretty, but its steering a little too far away from what make apple, apple. The whole skewmorphic design was their signature, it was so much different then anything else on the market, design wise anyway. The new design looks a bit like an apple knock off (A pretty one mind you).
It seems that apple has decided to take a back seat and try to perfect Andriods very square, very simple design. I don't know how well this will go down, im fairly sure there will be some die hard fans who refuse to update. Which will be a massive pain for UX and UI designers trying to cater for both.
One light at the end of the tunnel is that the app will be able to find which software your device will be accessing and can display everything accordingly. This - for the transitions phase- is great because all old designs will still be useful and can be viewed. But as iOS fizzles out a redesign is going to be necessary!
Im pretty shocked that apple has made this move, sure skewmorphisam has been criticised before, but it looked ok. The other parts of the interface im very happy for them to refresh, e.g the blue bar at the top for nearly everything, yikes whoever designed that must be shot. No, whoever allowed that to be on the OS should be shot!
I love how Apple seem to pinch bits and bobs from everwhere. They decided to pinch the andriod/windows 8 square simpleness and also the HTC's weather app interface. What was it Steve jobs said 'Good artists copy, great artists steal?'.
Im really glad they changed the design of the game centre. That was pretty darn awful. I know it was designed to look like a pool table-ish thing but it really looked atrocious!
One thing i think will be particularly uncomfortable is the 'Masses of whitespace' and 'White everything, toolbars, nav bars buttons etc'. Have you ever looked at your phone in the dark? How blindingly white it is usually? Now its even MORE white? Sounds like a recipe for early blindness.
